Abstract

Osteoporosis is degenerative disease that attacks bone and decreases the quality of life of the elderly. Osteoporosis is a major of health problem in elderly. Impact of untreated osteoporosis is the risk of fracture. According to the International Osteoporosis Foundation (2015), the proportion of people with osteoporosis in people over 50, women (32.3%) more than men (28.8%). The occurrence of osteoporosis is characterized by decreased bone mineral density. Calcium, magnesium and phosphorus intakes is needed in homeostasis and bone stabilization. Meanwhile, cholesterol can inhibit the formation of osteoblasts causing demineralization and decreased bone mineral density. This study was aimed to analyzed the correlation between calcium, magnesium, phosphorus intakes and total cholesterol with bone mineral density in elderly. This research was an analytical survey with cross sectional study. The subjects were elderly that living in the Social Services Tresna Werdha Jember. Subject taken purposively with inclusion criteria aged ≥ 50 years old, willing to follow the research and signed informed consent. The exclusion criteria were elderly with hearing loss, eating disorders, dementia, severe physical abnormalities / bed rest total, can not followed the examination of bone mineral density. Subjects obtained as many as 45 people. Mineral intake was measured by the Food Recall method. Total cholesterol examination using easy touch digital. Bone mineral density is assessed by densitometry. Data were analyzed using Spearman Rank Test correlation test. The results showed no relationship between mineral intake (p> 0.05) with bone mineral density. However, there was a significant relationship between total cholesterol levels and bone mineral density in the elderly.
