Abstract

This study aims to identify potential, analyze internal and external factors, and formulate strategies for revitalizing smallholder pig farming in Sonder District, Minahasa Regency. The survey was conducted in June–July 2025 in five villages and involved 96 livestock households: 7 active livestock farmers (7.3%) and 89 inactive livestock farmers (92.7%). Data were collected through questionnaires, interviews, field observations, and documentation, then analysed descriptively and through a SWOT analysis. The strengths score (1.79) was higher than the weaknesses (0.85), while the opportunities (1.79) were higher than the threats (0.76), resulting in coordinates X=0.94 and Y=1.03 in Quadrant I. The main strengths include livestock farming experience, family labor, pen assets, and household business flexibility. In contrast, the main opportunities come from market and socio-cultural demand, local feed sources, and village government support. Revitalization should distinguish between strengthening active farms and supporting inactive farmers through gradual re-entry, restocking, capital access, and technical assistance. Overall, smallholder pig farming in Sonder retains substantial revitalization potential when strategies are matched to household capacity and farmer readiness.
